GlobeMed connects university-based chapters with grassroots organizations in one-to-one, long-term partnerships. These partnerships take learning into the real world to help undergraduate students develop essential skills and perspectives that advance the movement for global health equity. Today there are GlobeMed chapters at 58 universities, each of which partners with one grassroots organization in Africa, Asia, or the Americas.
GlobeMed was founded ten years ago by a group of students who sought to challenge the status quo. Frustrated by the global engagement options offered on their campuses, they created a new model to partner with grassroots leaders who are already working to unleash the potential of their own communities. In the past decade these partnerships have improved the health of hundreds of thousands of people and challenged mainstream perceptions of young people’s capabilities.
Since 2007, we have mobilized over 2,000 current students and 4,000 alumni to raise over $2.5 million for more than 380 health projects in 19 countries across Africa, Asia, North America, and South America. From renovating a clinic in Rwanda to supporting nutrition initiatives in Cambodia to enhancing sanitation programs in El Salvador, these projects have tangibly improved the lives of thousands of people living in poverty around the world. ABOUT THE POSITION: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
We are looking for a visionary and strategic leader to build upon GlobeMed’s strong record of accomplishments and play a vital role in the organization’s next phase of growth. This is an opportunity to catalyze a strong organization into a new chapter through deepening of university-based programs and development of new initiatives for alumni and peers. The organization is primed to become a model for global networks by sparking new forms of collaboration, and the Executive Director will have the chance to build sustainable revenue and impact in creative, exciting ways over the coming years.
As the Executive Director, you will lead a full-time passionate staff of six in addition to a small team of energetic and driven volunteers. You will report to an active and supportive 15-person Board of Directors.
You will lead the staff and steward the board in their roles. You’ll be the public face of the organization, establishing and ensuring the integrity of its brand and reputation. You will be a leader, manager, and spokesperson with outstanding strategic, communication, collaboration, and fundraising skills.
Organizational Leadership (30%)
- Maintaining a deep understanding of and commitment to organizational strategies and goals, revising them as necessary to keep the strategic plan relevant and robust
- Fostering strategic alignment across program teams, operations, and development
- Effectively stewarding GlobeMed’s current members and allies while also reaching out to new and more diverse future stakeholders
- Confidently engaging with the board of directors, helping them identify how they can tap into their skills and talents to advance GlobeMed
- Managing preparations for quarterly board meetings and maintaining a steady flow of communication with the board between meetings to ensure a deep enough understanding of organizational activities to collectively set direction and policy for GlobeMed
- Ensure delivery of quality programmatic results that align with mission and strategy, as agreed upon with the board of directors
- Being a spokesperson for the organization and representing GlobeMed’s mission, values, and key messages when engaging with stakeholders
- Establishing and achieving fundraising goals as the primary staff member responsible for GlobeMed’s fundraising efforts
- Tapping into staff and board members’ talents, resources, and ideas to enhance fundraising activities; enhancing board members’ ability to identify fundraising opportunities and encouraging their ongoing participation as donors and solicitors
Organization and Team Management (25%)
- Hiring and developing new staff as appropriate and effectively managing and developing team members to ensure high performance, career development, and succession planning
- Cultivating a work environment that is inclusive and empowering while consistently identifying new opportunities for team members to develop their personal and professional leadership skills
- Ensuring sound financial, operational and administrative policies and controls are in place
- Developing and administering budgets, ensuring that funds are invested and spent wisely
- Leading the organization’s decision-making related to all necessary evaluation and technology tools to assess program results, performance outcomes, and impact measurement
Thought Leadership (15%)
- Maintaining a critical understanding of relevant literature and thought pieces
- Contributing to dialogue in the fields of global health, global development, and health equity through development of articles, speaking engagements, and community engagement tactics
- Positioning GlobeMed as a convener for global health symposia, workshops, conferences and other forums where we could bring together key stakeholders in the global health space
- Increasing accessibility of organizational wisdom and approaches through consulting and dialogue with peer organizations
WHO YOU ARE
- PROFESSIONAL | You have 4-8 years of relevant experience, including at least two years of nonprofit leadership. Preferably you have a strong familiarity of student run organizations, leadership development in global health, and/or chapter based organizations.
- FLEXIBLE & ENTREPRENEURIAL | You are extremely flexible, comfortable with ambiguity, eager to work in a young non-profit, and willing to roll up your sleeves to get the hard work done. You’ve proven that you can maintain poise and vision while immersed in fast-paced environments.
- AN ORGANIZATIONAL WIZARD | You can manage across multiple work streams, keeping deadlines, working through teams, and managing complexity by simplifying solutions with clarity and attention to detail.
- A PROBLEM SOLVER | You have excellent problem-solving skills, and are both highly analytical and can think strategically.
- A HUMBLE LEADER | You quickly gain trust from your internal team and external stakeholders. You have successful experience within inclusive, equity-focused approaches to leadership.

- A SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER | You have proven ability to successfully grow and sustain revenue, fundraise, or support fundraising efforts from a variety of resources and opportunities.
