About BoardSource

BoardSource is passionate about the nonprofit sector – we envision a world where every social sector organization has the leadership it needs to fulfill its mission and advance the public good. We have become the recognized leader in nonprofit board leadership, providing research, leadership, and practical resources to inspire and support excellence in nonprofit board and executive leadership. As a part of this, we work to inspire action on critical issues within the social sector that require new thinking and leadership from boards, including the urgent need to diversify social sector leadership so that nonprofits are better positioned to serve their communities and missions in ways that are inclusive and equitable.

The Challenge

Our 2017 Leading with Intent study collected information from over 1,300 nonprofit organization, of those, 90 percent of chief executives and 84 percent of board members reported as Caucasian; Twenty-seven (27) percent of boards identify as all white. Unfortunately, this is a longstanding trend. Since BoardSource began tracking diversity data through this study, the levels of board diversity have largely remained unchanged, with people of color and ethnic minorities never representing more than 18 percent of board membership.

At the most fundamental level, who serves on a board impacts how it functions and the decisions it makes. While board composition is not one-size-fits-all, a board that is homogeneous in any way risks having blind spots that negatively impact its ability to make the best decisions and plans for the organization. The blind spots created by a lack of racial and ethnic diversity are particularly concerning, as they may result in strategies and plans that ineffectively address societal challenges and inequities, or even reinforce them.

Our Solution

Through our research, resources, trainings, and consulting we have attempted to bring attention to this lack of board diversity challenge. While we have had some success to date, there is so much more that we need to do.  This is why we have created this unique new senior team member role to help us capture the attention of all board leaders about the urgent need for them to lead this change, along with other critical issues impacting the sector, and ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and resources to lead and implement this change in the sector, their communities and their organizations.   

 

About the role -  Head of External Leadership & Racial Equity

In collaboration with BoardSource’s President & CEO, Anne Wallestad, and other senior leaders, the Head of External Leadership & Racial Equity will orchestrate and execute BoardSource’s leadership on critical sector-wide issues. First and foremost, this includes a focus on our work to position boards for stronger leadership on diversity, inclusion, and equity. You will also play a lead role in orchestrating and implementing all active leadership initiatives, which currently includes focused work on amplifying the board’s role in advocacy and strategic alliances and restructuring.

This Head of External Leadership & Racial Equity will provide strategy and leadership for a team of four, including setting and managing budgets. You will work to integrate BoardSource’s leadership agenda into educational programming and resources for our member as well as the BoardSource Leadership Forum, our biennial conference.

The ideal candidate must be deeply invested in and committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity in the social sector and exhibit a track record for being both a compelling writer and presenter on topics related to the critical need for diversity, inclusion and racial equity in social sector leadership.

This unique role requires a combination of skills grounded in organizational development, strategic communications, and education, in addition to fluency and expertise in diversity, inclusion and racial equity concepts and practices. Ideal candidates will be passionate and compelling advocates for strong nonprofit board leadership with the ability to engage with partners and staff in a collaborative style to help us lead this critical change in the nonprofit sector.
