Business Assistance Associate

Fair Food Network is seeking a Business Assistance Associate to coordinate business and technical assistance support for food entrepreneurs working in or serving low income/low access communities across the state. A successful candidate will have project management skills and experience working with low-income communities and communities of color.

The Business Assistance Associate will serve our flagship Fair Food Michigan (FFMI) program. FFMI includes the Michigan Good Food Fund (MGFF), a $30 million public-private partnership loan fund. MGFF provides financing and business assistance to healthy food projects that benefit underserved communities across Michigan. The Business Assistance Associate will support our activities to assist and advise food businesses. This work aims to promote racial and social equity, job creation, healthy food access and economic development.

This role will report to and work closely with the Director of Fair Food Michigan, Jean Chorazyczewski.

We are a part of the communities that we serve. This position will be based in Detroit or Ann Arbor, Michigan. We seek applicants who understand the racial and socio-economic backgrounds of those we serve.

Fair Food Network’s hiring process for this role is rigorous and may be different from other hiring practices you have encountered before.  We practice “blind recruitment” as part of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in order to overcome unconscious biases that emerge through traditional résumé reviews. We evaluate candidates primarily through written exercises and trial project. This serves a dual purpose of providing candidates a taste our work and our recruitment team insight into whether a candidate possesses the skills and competencies that are a prerequisite to success in our firm.

Our hiring process includes these steps:

  1. Written application for initial screening
  2. 30-45 minute phone interview assess fit and answer candidate’s questions
  3. Trial project to be completed on your own timeline
  4. Half-day in-person interview with additional members of Fair Food Network staff including a member of our executive team
  5. Reference checks
  6. Offer issued

We are committed to transparency throughout this process. We understand interviewing can be stressful and aim to minimize that stress and uncertainty. To give you a sense of timing steps two through six above typically take four to six weeks.
